The free version of Spapp Monitoring locks GPS updates to a minimum of 5 minutes. I activated the premium trial to test faster intervals. Here’s what the battery cost looked like per hour, on a device with the screen off:

1-minute update → 4.7% battery drain/hour
3-minute update → 2.5% drain/hour
5-minute update → 1.8% drain/hour
10-minute update → 1.1% drain/hour

All measurements used high accuracy mode. Switching to battery saving (network only) cut drain by roughly 60%, but accuracy degraded to 15–40 meters in suburban areas and over 100 meters indoors.

GPS Acquisition Time: Cold Start vs. Warm Start

I rebooted the phone and immediately started tracking. The first fix (cold start) took an average of 38 seconds across 10 attempts. After a 2-hour gap without tracking, a warm start yielded a fix in 9 seconds. If the device had lost GPS for 30 minutes inside a tunnel, re-acquisition after exiting averaged 22 seconds. Stationary Drift Over 24 Hours

Indoor & Underground: When GPS Fails

Wooden house (single floor): The phone could occasionally lock onto 2–3 satellites near windows, leading to position fixes within 18 meters about 30% of the time. The rest relied on WiFi positioning, with errors of 10–25 meters.

Underground parking (3 levels down): GPS signal vanished within 5 seconds of entry. The app switched to cell tower triangulation, yielding location errors between 45 and 120 meters. While driving between floors, updates paused for up to 4 minutes. After exiting the garage, a warm GPS re-acquisition took 8.2 seconds.

Steel-framed office building: Zero GPS satellites. Only cell ID location was available, with errors ranging from 200 to 500 meters—essentially useless for room-level tracking.

Practical Setup for an Elderly Parent’s Walk

If your main goal is to follow a relative’s morning route without draining the phone by lunchtime, set Spapp Monitoring to 2-minute updates with high accuracy, enable only when the walk starts (on-demand tracking), and disable background sync for non-location data. This kept the phone at 72% battery after a 90-minute walk, with median accuracy of 3.1 meters. Expect a delay of about 10 seconds after the walk begins for the first accurate fix if the phone has been indoors.

Note: All tests ran on Android 13 with the August 2023 Google Play Services update. Using an older device or different chipset may alter cold start times and indoor accuracy. The free app version forcibly limits update rates, so critical monitoring may require the trial.
